My friend Loretta

Loretta Behrens

Loretta Behrens is much larger than her diminutive stature.

I think I have known her for at least 50 years……a fireball of a skater, a real villain when she skated, a loudmouth, but what a heart of gold.  She has been an inspiration and help to every Derby girl she has been in contact with.  She gives them the history and the standards of the game as well as her knowledge of how to go forward and make Roller Derby as great as it can be.  I love her.

She has not had it easy after her skating career ended; she lives in Las Vegas and works at catering for conventions and functions and works long and hard.  Her brother, an outstanding and well-known musician with a classic band, has been hospitalized for liver problems.  But she doesn’t burden anyone with her problems, and makes certain that she is on the internet, letting everyone know what is happening.

Loretta has Phil, the perfect husband for her.  He dotes on her, is so proud of her and goes along with all of her mishigas (check your yiddish book).  And he is quite an athlete himself, an outstanding bowler who still averages in the high 190’s.

They went on a trip to Georgia a month ago and Phil was stricken ill.  He had a massive heart attack and a stroke and is still hospitalized.  He has lost 20 pounds, his heart is at 25% capacity, and of course Loretta is by his side.

It is time to support this legend who has helped everyone else.  Let her know you care on facebook…..if you are near her in Georgia, see if she needs some love…….some real Derby Love.

This is what Roller Derby family means.

  1. I love Loretta! Every May, she and Phil open their house to friends on their way to the Laughlin Roller Derby Reunion. She has always been very kind to me and keeps me posted of any news coming from the West Coast. I pray for her and Phil daily. I hope that he is back to normal soon. They surely can use our prayers and positive energy.

    Thanks for posting this, Jerry!

  2. Loretta is an amazing person. I will get in touch with her right away and send my love and support. I’ve never met anyone like her a true “one of a kind”…

  3. Loretta has always been a jewel to me. A primary and limitless source of history, experience and encouragement to anyone who reaches out to her. She has opened doors, eased disappointments, lovingly scolded and guided so many skaters in the years I have known her. I have traveled from fan to skater to promoter with Loretta as one of my biggest cheerleaders. I lovingly refer to her as “Mama” Loretta, because if there can be “derby wives”, she is the very definition of my Roller Derby Mom.

I know Loretta and Phil have many earnest prayers being said on their behalf. And if anyone can get Phil home and well, Mama Loretta can.

  4. Hi Jerry,

“Derby Love” means “With Sympathy” worldwide. Thank you for including us. One day, I will reach her age and will be mother to hundreds of derby girls on my league, wives to some and grandmothers to others.

  5. Loretta’s been a great friend as long as I’ve known her. She was the first person from the classic derby world to reach out to modern derby skaters.

I’ve met Phil a few times but haven’t ever had a chance to get to know him. Between his wife and I, he couldn’t get a word in edgewise!

Wishing the best for Phil and Loretta.

Here’s a nice photo I own of Loretta.

  7. The Atlanta Rollergirls have taken Loretta and Phil as their personal project: to help, feed if necessary, run errands, etc and to have her appear at their first match later in February. As Robert Redford as the Sundance Kid said: “Who are these guys”…….slways around when help is needed.

  8. This is awesome and what I believe to be the true spirit of Roller Derby. Way to step up Atlanta RollerGirls, no skater left behind 🙂 xx factor

  9. I was a fan of Loretta when she was an outstanding Roller Derby skater in the Chicago Coliseum in the 1950’s. She has strong opinions about the Roller Derby of the past and present. I always enjoy her comments, and she is in my thoughts and prayers in this difficult time in her life.

  10. Loretta & Phil – I had met them for less than 5 minutes (stopped there on my way to Laughlin) I felt like I was at “Grandma’s” house such Love & kindness extended to a strsnger(a 5 minute one) they are my “Derby” mom & dad & I think & pray for them daily as I do all my “derby” friends (old, new, flat track old-school) but these folks are extra special & hold a special place in my heart. Loretta stay strong & Phil stay stubborn you are both “good fighters” so hang in there & remember we all love & care about you & just focus on getting well & then just give us all “TheBusiness”
    Love & God’s Blessings
