Usually I get a little bit excited about composing another post to my blog, but not today.
Many of you remember my post several years back “I Like Women” about the terrible violence done to Lori Milkeris, and how her recovery (helped by many of you) continues even today.
And out of her story came the facebook site “Derby against Domestic Violence”, a private site I hope those who need it wlll join, over 2600 have.
Well, I was excited when Astoria in Clatsop County Oregon – just a few miles from my summer nirvana for all my life, Seaside -formed a Derby team, Shanghaied Roller Derby. My father invented Roller Derby and we had a home in Seaside and our family gave Seltzer Park to the community. I have become friends with some and hope to get up for a game in the beautiful restored armory.
And one (who I correspond with but have never met) is a beautiful single mother of three, with an excellent profession, but struggling as most seem to be these days. Several months ago she broke up with her boyfriend after a violent confrontation, and managed to get a restraining order, which seems to be meaningless.
He almost stalks her, scares her children, and sends terrible messages to her friends, and has tried to ruin her reputation….she is distraught, and gets no help from the police. Apparently they visited him, and ended up in a “good old boy” encounter at his place of work. This is not his first rodeo; he has had such restraining orders in the past, and was an MMA type fighter also, which makes it more scary.
Her life is in shambles, she does not know what to do. Women are in such a disadvantage in our society, especially in the “villages” such as Astoria.
I am not certain why I am even writing this, but there must be help out there in our world of sisters and brothers.
